Description

This is the first ever event at Camden Fixing Factory - it's a Restart Party specifically aimed at creating a hyper-local fixing community in the Queens Crescent area - if you're within walking distance this is specifically aimed at you, but all are welcome to attend

We're inviting local people not only to bring broken items, but also to bring their fixing skills - not just electronics or mechanical fixing skills, but anything to do with repair, maintenance or restoration...we'll be creating a map of skills and will try to match repairs to repairers where possible

It looks like it could be quite busy - an article in Camden New Journal has sparked a lot of interest

It will be market day in Queens Crescent, and - weather permitting - we'll be spreading out into the market - meaning we have both indoor and outdoor (super ventilated) fixing areas

Long term we'll have a fully equipped electronics lab set up with a range of spares, and a 3D printer...but for now if you're a fixer please bring your tools kits to supplement what we have already - expect a bench power supply, sig generator, and possibly an oscilloscope to be available for use

We'll need some experienced fixers to get this off to a good start...we've already got:

  • laptop with BSOD
  • Desk lamp that doesn't light
  • travel kettle with non-latching switch
  • mantle clock (mechanical issues)
  • non-latching toaster

Alongside the repairs we'll have some beyond-repair laptops to teardown as a hands-on activity: simply opening devices can be a real eye-opener for many

Fixing Factory - Queen's Crescent, Camden

We're on a mission to restore repair to the heart of our communities

We plan to turn a derelict high street shop unit into a social community hub for repair, maintenance and restoration - we'll have well equipped electronics benches, and a mission to get local hands fixing. Working with existing repair businesses in the area, we'll be drawing together and sharing skills and developing training for a new generation of fixers

We'll test out some of the myths around fixing, possibly in a Hackathon format (so please make suggestions for these) - with the goal of busting some of them myths wide open

But we only have until March 2023 to demonstrate this can work to our funders - if you enjoy this kind of a challenge, love working with communities, and would like to part of an exciting new project then let me know as there'll be a range of volunteering opportunities

We'll be planning a few pop up events and stands at various locations around the borough of Camden over this Summer and Autumn - as well as setting up our bricks and mortar home (once we find a suitable venue)

We also have a sister project: Fixing Factory Brent - which you may already have heard of - and specialises in laptop repair at Abbey Road recycling centre. The Fixing Factory projects involves a range of partners with The Restart Project leading in Brent and Possible (the climate action charity I work for) leading in Camden
