Description

What do you do with a chair when the leg has come loose? With a light that no longer works? A holey jumper? Throw it away? No way! In conjunction with the folks from Traid, we are hosting an afternoon of fixing and skill-sharing.

Bring your broken items along to our Prepare to Repair event and get expert advice from the fixperts and skilled enthusiasts so that you can try to repair, reuse and recycle your items, thus reducing the chances of throwing it away.

We hope that we can help Londoners view all of their possessions in a new light and appreciate their lifelong value. By reducing our dependency on throwing away and starting over and instead focusing on repairing and reusing items, we hope to inspire enthusiasm for a sustainable society.

By learning some basic repair skills and sharing our practical knowledge with each other we can learn to love our stuff again and save it from landfill. Come and spend an afternoon with like-minded folk who are reinvigorating the ‘make-do and mend’ culture so that it once more resonates with a whole new generation.

Bring along your broken item* from home for assessment, and if deemed repairable, you can start making repairs using our tools under our guidance. We don’t fix things for you – instead we advise on the process and give a hand where we can. The idea is for the community to learn and share life-long repair skills and help each other to bring back stuff to former glory.

*Due to the time limits and the number of volunteer fixperts that are here on the day, we can mostly only help to fix one item per person.

What Can You Bring?

Transportable items are best to bring along, such as crockery, bicycles, toys, umbrellas, small electricals, clothing and knitwear…. In fact, there is very little that cannot be given a new lease of life.

Volunteering

If you have some knowledge and repair skills and would like to be one of our fixperts during our events, please get in touch. We also need people to help organise, make tea and generally be an all-round good egg.

Prepare to Repair Events will take place at The Goodlife Centre (see below for new dates). The Goodlife Centre is just ten minutes from Waterloo, Borough and Southwark tube stations.

NO NEED TO REGISTER.
