Description

Burwell Repair Cafe is a new community initiative from Burwell Parish Council’s Climate Forum. An enthusiastic group of volunteers have come together to organise the first Repair Cafe on November 6th. Burwell Repair Cafe will be held in the Gardiner Memorial Hall, where a recent refurbishment has included an air source heat pump, solar power and a high standard of insulation, which has greatly reduced the building’s carbon footprint.

Repair Cafes are non-commercial and the repairs are done free of charge – though voluntary donations are very welcome. There are no promises and no guarantees, but if something can be saved the repairers will do their very best. Repairers are always keen to teach visitors how to do the repair themselves, or at least have them watch while they do it. The items brought along for repair can include clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, tools, toys, and much more.

Cambridgeshire Repair Cafe Network

Repair Cafes are distinct from Restart Parties, but there is considerable overlap, and much to be gained from sharing information.  They are co-ordinated from the Netherlands (http://repaircafe.org), and are not in competition with Restart Parties (there's more than enough to fix for us both!)

Repair Cafes tend to be less hi-tech than Restart Parties, though we will tackle computers, laptops, tablets and phones when requested.  Repairs are always free, and a cafe (which charges modest prices) is associated with the event, to cater for those who are waiting to be seen.

The Cambridge Repair Cafe Group co-ordinates Repair Cafes in the Cambridge area.  There is a link to the group at http://www.repaircafe.org.uk.  Currently active at least once a quarter are:

New Repair Cafes are expected shortly in Haddenham and Linton, and we have done one-off events in Cambridge and Ely.

We are aiming to set the record for the largest Repair Cafe in the world in Cambridge on 11th November 2017.
