Volunteers at a Restart Party fixing devices, cropped on hands

Description

Restart Parties are pay as you feel community events organised by volunteers to inspire people to mend their broken gadgets, buy for longevity and prevent electronics waste.

This is the first Leicester Restart party in the 2018-2019 season at our home venue of Leicester Hackspace. More date will be announced in the near future with a new programme of regular events all around the county.

There is free parking on site, and attendees are reminded that this venue is on the first floor and requires ascending a flight of stairs and thus accessibility may be difficult for those with mobility issues. We hope that this will to be the case for other dates and venues later int he year.

If you want to come and get help mending something
You are well advised to message on Leicester Fixers or comment on the event page detailing the item you are planning to bring and what you believe the fault to be so we can do a prior assessment before the event.

AT THE RESTART:
Ensure to arrive at your allocated time slot if you’ve discussed the item poor to the event.
For Walk-ins with items to repair, our ability to help you will depend greatly on how many people are attending and have already booked slots. You are advised to arrive early and expect to wait to be seen.
For anyone else wanting to meet us without an item, we will be more than happy to chat to you and tell you what we are up to.
Please arrive during the first two hours
Please bring devices charged and their power leads/adapters and any media that will be required for testing.
Please do not expect us to have spare parts or replacement mobile screens. This is not a free repair shop, it’s a pop-up community repair event!

NOT COMING? Please share this post with your peers!

Leicester Fixers

Who are we?

Leicester Fixers is a community of amateur and professional repairers and non-repairers that work together to mend the broken and learn more about repair. We are under the umbrella of Transition Leicester to create more resilient and sustainable communities.

What do we do?

We run Restart parties which are ''pay as you feel'' community events organised by volunteers to inspire people to mend their broken gadgets, buy for longevity and prevent electronic waste. We focus mainly on electrical items, nevertheless we welcome other types of repair such as mending clothes and fixing bikes, it all depends on people's skills in the areas we go to.

What is the Leicester Fixers - Leicestershire Outreach Programme 2018-2019?

We received a grant from Leicestershire County Council to reach out to communities across Leicestershire so they can too self-organise to bring repair events in their community.

We are currently targeting places such as Loughborough, Coalville, Hinckley, Uppingham, Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray, Lutterworth.

What do we provide through the programme?

Through the Leicestershire Outreach Programme, we will provide the tools, the skills, the training and the insurance for communities to run repair events.

We will help with organising a first event so the involved community can see first-hand how we do it. For the subsequent events, we will provide a PAT tester with a volunteer, the tools plus an insurance cover.

If the community wants to make the repair events in their local area a sustainable feature, we will provide a PAT test training so they are able to check the safety features of their items.

As part of the project, we will run a survey with the attendees to gain an understanding of their experience through the Restart Party and how they may have changed as a result of trying to repair their broken item. We will also have an end of project event where all the people interested in repair across Leicestershire can meet.

How can you help?

By becoming one of the individual or community who will bring repair events in their local area! There are three main requirements:

  1. ·      The first is to share the words with people in your local area who may be interested in getting involved in the repair events as a fixer, organiser or communicator.
  2. ·      The second is to think of a venue, preferably free, where you can host an event.
  3. ·      The third is to get an idea of the time period when you would like to organise an event. Get a calendar out!

Once you have a minimum of 2-3 fixers, an idea of a venue to approach and an idea of when, get in touch. We will book a date for the first event and we will get the communication machine started so that as many people as possible get to know the event and are able to come along.
