Volunteers at a Restart Party fixing devices, cropped on hands

After a successful first event in April, we are keen to do it again!

We have all sorts of people offering to help to repair things, many of whom have been volunteering at Repair Cafes across Cambridgeshire for several years. More news on repairers nearer the time.

Our team of volunteer repairers are helping for free and there is no charge for admission. We welcome donations to cover our costs and to help us grow our network and foster a culture of repair. They will pinpoint the problem and try to fix it there and then for you, or let you know what spare parts to get for when you come back next time. This event is run in partnership with Cambridge Carbon Footprint and insured by Wessex Insurance.

During the event we will have a recycling bin for small electrical items only which are beyond repair. Most small items with a plug, battery or cable will be accepted, including toys, appliances, phones, power tools etc; but we can’t take smoke alarms, damaged batteries, ammonia fridges, pressurised cylinders, laptops or screens. The items will be used for parts where possible, and otherwise dismantled to be recycled.

The Eco Hub cafe will also be open so come along for a drink and a biscuit to see what is going on even if you don’t have an item booked in for repair this time. Also do get in touch if you think that you have repair skills that you would like to offer and then we can let you know what’s involved. The venue has good disability access and facilities and we welcome all.

There is a car park available right next to the Eco Hub and plenty of bike racks.

Gamlingay Repair Cafe

Gamlingay Repair Cafe is a volunteer-led venture between The Eco Hub community centre and the Climate Action Group of Gamlingay Parish Council. As a group we were looking for positive actions to take in our local area to reduce our collective carbon footprint, reduce waste as well as bring the community together. Our first cafe is Sunday 7th April 2024 and we hope to run an event twice a year.

Restart Party Do’s and Don’ts

  • Check if your device is still within warranty, you may be eligible for a free repair, replacement or a refund. (Which? helps in the UK).
  • Take responsibility for your device and your data. Our volunteers are here to help you learn to fix your gadget, not to provide a free repair service. Get involved!
  • Backup your data. We can’t be responsible for your cat pics, so please back up your device before you come. (Of course you already do this once a month, right?)
  • Charge up your device and bring all leads.
  • Get in touch with organisers if you have any questions about whether a fix is possible.

  • Assume repairs will be successful. We help fix over half of devices at our events. Even if your repair is unsuccessful, you will learn about your device and why it failed.
  • Expect us to have spare parts. But we can help you source them. Often people visit twice: first we’ll help diagnose the fault, then you source the spare part, and on your return we’ll help you do a replacement.
  • Attempt a mobile screen repair just to save money. DIY mobile screen repair is a learning opportunity first and foremost. Please see our advice page first.
  • Bring a microwave.
