Volunteers at a Restart Party fixing devices, cropped on hands

Description

Got something that’s broken? Want to try fixing it but not sure how?

Repair Café Edinburgh will be at The Shed in Spylaw Park Colinton, for an afternoon of mending and repair!

Our Repair Cafés are free pop-up community events where you can bring your item and volunteer fixers will guide you through your repair.

Our volunteers will be on hand to help you to repair your broken electrical, electronic and mechanical devices such as toys, small / low-voltage electricals, laptops, clothing and fabrics… we’ll also have experts to help with bicycles.

Not everything’s fixable at our events – we’re limited by time, spare parts, safety, capacity – to avoid disappointment we encourage you to contact us beforehand.

So if you’ve got something that you want to fix, you can email us at [email protected] to confirm suitability and to reserve your place. Or just turn up on the day and we’ll try to take a look.

Please note: At busy times you might need to wait for a volunteer to become available. Priority will be given to local residents and those with reserved places.

Last repairs will be accepted at 4.30pm to allow time to finish up.  To make our events fair to everyone, we ask that you only bring one item for repair.

To find us: https://what3words.com/simple.bubble.gained; the venue is on the National Cycle Route 75 and on the 45 bus route.

Restart Party Do’s and Don’ts

DO

  • Check if your device is still within warranty, you may be eligible for a free repair, replacement or a refund. (Which? helps in the UK).
  • Take responsibility for your device and your data. Our volunteers are here to help you learn to fix your gadget, not to provide a free repair service. Get involved!
  • Backup your data. We can’t be responsible for your cat pics, so please back up your device before you come. (Of course you already do this once a month, right?)
  • Charge up your device and bring all leads.
  • Get in touch with organisers if you have any questions about whether a fix is possible.

DON’T

  • Assume repairs will be successful. We help fix over half of devices at our events. Even if your repair is unsuccessful, you will learn about your device and why it failed.
  • Expect us to have spare parts. But we can help you source them. Often people visit twice: first we’ll help diagnose the fault, then you source the spare part, and on your return we’ll help you do a replacement.
  • Attempt a mobile screen repair just to save money. DIY mobile screen repair is a learning opportunity first and foremost. Please see our advice page first.
  • Bring a microwave.
