The Big Fix 2024 & Repair Café Foyle Turns Two!

May is the month of The Big Fix. It also happens to be our birthday! Can you believe that it is our second birthday already?

The Big Fix is an event that aims to help Repair Cafes nationwide fix as many things as possible during the month of May. Last year, 83 Repair Cafés and 800 volunteers took part in the BIG FIX, mending 2,761 items and saving 48 tonnes CO2e. We hope that this years event will be even bigger and better. Join us at U3A Foyle in Gransha on Saturday 25th May from 10.30 to 1pm. Help us celebrate our birthday and The Big Fix by bringing along your broken stuff and having a cup of tea and some cake!

Repair Café Foyle

Repair Café Foyle is a 'Repair & Share Foyle' project, initially incubated under the charity, Zero Waste North West, before becoming an independent community interest company.

To date, we have formed a core team of volunteers willing to 'have a wee go' at doing basic repairs on bikes, small household electrical items, woodwork, mechanicals such as sewing machines and clocks, and of course a strong textile team - that includes a leather specialist.

We travel around our community to host venues and are excited to develop our project further. We are very grateful to the team at Repair Cafe Belfast, who has given us invaluable advice as we embarked on our journey. We are also members of the Northern Ireland Resources Network - working to promote sustainable reuse and repair across Northern Ireland.

Restart Party Do’s and Don’ts

  • Check if your device is still within warranty, you may be eligible for a free repair, replacement or a refund. (Which? helps in the UK).
  • Take responsibility for your device and your data. Our volunteers are here to help you learn to fix your gadget, not to provide a free repair service. Get involved!
  • Backup your data. We can’t be responsible for your cat pics, so please back up your device before you come. (Of course you already do this once a month, right?)
  • Charge up your device and bring all leads.
  • Get in touch with organisers if you have any questions about whether a fix is possible.

  • Assume repairs will be successful. We help fix over half of devices at our events. Even if your repair is unsuccessful, you will learn about your device and why it failed.
  • Expect us to have spare parts. But we can help you source them. Often people visit twice: first we’ll help diagnose the fault, then you source the spare part, and on your return we’ll help you do a replacement.
  • Attempt a mobile screen repair just to save money. DIY mobile screen repair is a learning opportunity first and foremost. Please see our advice page first.
  • Bring a microwave.
